Canada opens Youth Olympics against Russia

Innsbruck, Austria – Reid Gardiner scored once and added an assist, but it wasn’t enough as Canada dropped a 4-3 decision to Russia in the opening game of the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games on Friday.

Gardiner, added to the team as an injury replacement last month, pulled the Canadians to within a goal with three minutes to go, but that would be as close as they would get.

“We were with them the whole way, especially in the third period,” Canadian forward Eric Cornel told iihf.com. “It’s a tough game to lose but we look forward to coming back against the Americans.”

The Lethbridge Hurricanes 2011 3rd overall Bantam draft pick Ryan Pilon (Duck Lake, Sask./Beardy’s, SMAAAHL) scored in the first period to briefly make it a 1-1 game, while Adam Brooks got Canada to within a goal at 3-2 in the second. Joe Hicketts added two assists, while Keven Bouchard made 25 saves in the Canadian goal.

Prior to the game, it was announced that Hicketts would wear the ‘C’ as Canada’s captain, while Cornel and Pilon will serve as alternates.

Canada gets back to action Sunday when it faces the United States (10am Lethbridge time.)  For more information on the 2012 Youth Winter Olympics, visit www.hockeycanada.ca or www.innsbruck2012.com
