Canes close out US road trip with a loss to Spokane

Spokane, WA – The Lethbridge Hurricanes closed out their mini 2 game road trip against the Spokane Chiefs, a team that sits 2nd in the US Division. The Canes are coming off a 4-1 loss in Tri City and have surrendered the first goal in all 5 games so far this season, but the Hurricanes know that getting off to a fast start would be a huge difference maker moving forward.

It was a great opening 10 minutes for Lethbridge who had a number of quality scoring chances, but they were just unable to beat Chiefs netminder Eric Williams. The Canes were able to limit any chances by Spokane to generate much early on but despite outshooting the Chiefs 9-4 early in the game they continued to be denied by Williams. Spokane opened up the scoring when the Canes got caught and that led to a breakaway for Mitch Holmberg. The Canes would then run into a bit of penalty trouble and Spokane scored on both powerplays in the 1st period. At 14:07 Todd Fiddler gathered up his own rebound and beat Ty Rimmer and not even 2 minutes later Collin Valcourt made it a 3-0 game when he scored 5-hole. That 3 goal lead didn’t last, just 9 seconds later Jaimen Yakubowski (assists: Spencer Galbraith, Axel Blomqvist) buried his 3rd of the year making it a 3-1 game after 20 minutes with the Canes narrowly outshooting the Chiefs 12-10.

Scoring chances early in the 2nd favored the Chiefs, but Rimmer made a number of saves to keep it a 3-1 game. Lethbridge was back on the PK when Remi Laurencelle (assist: Jaimen Yakubowski) scored shorthanded finding the top corner at the 8:25 mark making it a 3-2 game. That goal was the 1st career WHL goal for the rookie Laurencelle. Ty Rimmer showing his dominance once again as the Hurricanes were heavily outshot 19-4 in the frame, but the Canes played better and had some good momentum thanks to the goaltending and the shorthanded goal.

The Canes would continue to press for the equalizer and have a number of great chances but Eric Williams came up with one save after another to maintain the Chiefs one goal lead in the 3rd. Later in the period, Tanner Mort would give the Chiefs a little breathing room with his goal that would make it 4-2 and that’s how this one would end as the Canes fall to 2-4-0-0 on the season. Final shots on goal were 43-29 in favor of the Chiefs. Canes were 0/3 on the powerplay while Spokane was 2/4. Tonight’s 3 stars: 3) Jaimen Yakubowski 2) Ty Rimmer 1) Eric Williams.
