Lethbridge, AB – Playing their 4th game of a 6 game home stand, the Lethbridge Hurricanes have managed just one win so far (3-2 over Prince George on Oct 12th) This week, it’s Brandon, Kamloops and Moose Jaw, but the Canes are ready for a breakout game and it came tonight against the Wheat Kings. Tonight’s game marked the return of Brady Ramsay from a 5-game suspension and Nick Buonassisi who was traded to Brandon in the off-season.
Brandon opened the scoring at the 4:51 mark when Jayce Hawryluk picked the top corner on Ty Rimmer, but the rest of the period was all Lethbridge. The Canes played their best period of the year outscoring, outworking and outshooting their opponents. The Canes drew even less than a minute after the WK’s scored when Jay Merkley (Spencer Galbraith, Jamal Watson) tipped a shot past Curtis Honey. The Canes would later have a goal waved off but moments later, Jaimen Yakubowski (Axel Blomqvist, Russ Maxwell) scored his 4th of the year giving Lethbridge the lead. With 5 minutes left the Canes would go on their second powerplay of the period and Brady Ramsay (Dan Johnston, Macoy Erkamps) would score his second of the year giving the Canes the 3-1 lead through 20 minutes and they also led on the shotclock 23-8.
The Wheat Kings had a little more jump in the 2nd period, but were unable to score on their chances. Lethbridge had a chance to add to their lead when Jamal Watson was hauled down by WK’s Ryan Pulock. Watson narrowly missed converting on the penalty shot and it remained a 3-1 game. Midway through the second, the homeside would make it a 4-1 game when Macoy Erkamps (Brady Ramsay, Graham Hood) scored his 1st of the year. Back to back penalties gives the Canes another PP and they converted with the man advantage for the 3rd time in their 5 opportunities when Dan Johnston (Macoy Erkamps, Brady Ramsay) ripped a point shot behind Honey making it 5-1 game after 40 minutes. The Canes continued to outshoot Brandon 36-20.
In the 3rd, a little more offence when Russ Maxwell stole the puck at his own blueline and moved in on a breakaway scoring his team leading 6th goal of the season making it a 6-1 game and that’s how this one would end. Lethbridge out shot Brandon 46-36 and finally got their powerplay working finishing the night 3/6 while the WK’s were 0/3.
The Dickies Hardest Working Hurricane: Graham Hood and tonight’s 3 Stars: 3) Dan Johnston 2) Macoy Erkamps 1) Brady Ramsay
