Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes, known as the “Cane Train” have found their stride in recent weeks and were coming off a dominating 6-1 performance over Regina Friday. The team looked to keep the momentum going as they hosted the Swift Current Broncos, a team they played and shutout 4-0 on Tuesday night. A couple of notes heading into this game – Forward Jay Merkley was riding a 7 game point streak (5G, 3A) while Goalie Ty Rimmer was making his 16th straight start and entering the game he was 10 shots shy of hitting the 500 save milestone this season.
The Canes got off to another hot start and threw 17 shots at Eetu Laurikainen in the first period. Lethbridge with a number of good scoring chances among their 17 shots and they would finally beat the Finnish goalie at 15:32 of the first period. Captain Graham Hood finally got rewarded after 4 scoring chances, when he buried his 1st of the season on the powerplay. Assists on Hood’s first goal went to Brady Ramsay and Sam McKechnie as the Canes took the lead into the first intermission. At the other end, Rimmer wasn’t nearly as busy stopping all 7 of the shots he faced.
Swift Current would pull even in the second less than 8 minutes into the period. The Canes were on another man advantage but Adam Lowry had a breakaway and rifled a shot past Rimmer to level the game. Not even two minutes later the Hurricanes retook the lead as Craig Leverton (Macoy Erkamps, Jamal Watson) scored his first of the year on a rebound, but they weren’t done yet. Brady Ramsay (Dan Johnston) picked the top corner on Laurikainen making it a 3-1 game, but the Canes would add another before the period was done. Craig Leverton (Watson, Merkley) buried his second of the game giving the Canes a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes. The Canes dominated the period once again outshooting the Broncos 20 – 9 in the frame and 37-16 overall.
Swift Current would turn the goaltending duties over to Landon Bow in the 3rd and he would stop all 13 shots he faced while Rimmer would stop the 7 shots he faced as this game would end 4-1 in favor of the Hurricanes. Lethbridge picks up 4 points for the weekend as wins over Regina and the Broncos give them a record of 8-7-1-0 which is good for 5th in the Conference. The Canes finished the night outshooting the Broncos 50-23 and over the two games this weekend, they outshot their opponents 105-52. Lethbridge went 1/7 on the power play while Swift was 0/4.
