Lethbridge, AB – This afternoon in Calgary, the Western Canada Challenge Cup, featuring the highest rated players in the Under 16 age category gets underway at Father David Bauer Arena.
The tournament is a partnership between the four Western Provincial Hockey Branches (Hockey Alberta, BC Hockey, Hockey Manitoba and the Saskatchewan Hockey Association) and the Western Hockey League. Four Lethbridge Hurricanes Prospects will be competing in the event which wraps up on Sunday.
The Hurricanes 1st round pick (4th overall) Giorgio Estephan was named to Team Alberta. Estephan is currently top 15 in Alberta Midget Hockey League scoring with 12 points (7G, 5A) in 9 games played with the SSAC Athletics and he was named an Alternate Captain with Team Alberta.
Thomas Lenchyshyn (1st round, 18th overall) and Colt Conrad (3rd round, 53rd overall) were named to Team Manitoba. Conrad is currently 3rd in team and Manitoba Midget League scoring with 17 points (6G, 11A) with the Pembina Valley Hawks. Lenchyshyn has played 9 games with the Eastman Selects.
Hurricanes 11th round pick, Kody White was named to Team Saskatchewan for the Challenge Cup. White plays for the PA Mintos in the Saskatchewan Midget Triple A Hockey League and is currently 4th in rookie scoring with 3G, 2A in 8 games.
Team Alberta is the two-time defending Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup champion after they successfully defended their 2009 title and defeated Team Manitoba 10-4 in the gold medal game at the 2011 event.
